Tennessee is a “top six” state for UFO sightings listed in UFO Cases of Interest: 2018 Edition, according to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).

Higher populated states California and Pennsylvania topped the list with 15 cases each, then Missouri followed with 13 cases, Florida 12 cases – and Ohio and Tennessee with 10 cases each.

Tennessee is the 36th largest state, and the 16th most populated state, but editors were choosing from the 7,651 UFO reports received worldwide in 2017. Of those total cases, 5,485 occurred in the U.S., and 2,098 of those cases after investigation were deemed closed as Unknowns or Information Only. And from that final group, 1,827 occurred during 2017. MUFON editors then chose 241 for the book that appeared to be the best cases for further research.

MUFON Communications Director Roger Marsh released the 281-page book that covers top cases from 2017 at MUFON’s annual Symposium the last week of July. The book also offers readers four indexes for tracking cases: Location, Object, Site and Witness.

Tennessee UFO activity kicked off early in the year and popped up in six different months between January and October 2017 with a variety of shapes including, triangles, discs, cylinders, spheres and diamond-shaped objects.

The case overviews follow in the order they occurred during 2017.

A Tennessee witness at Kingsport reported a slow-moving, triangle-shaped object moving overhead, according to testimony in Case 81628.

The witness had just left his home about 7 p.m. on January 18, 2017.

“As I was putting the key in my car door to unlock it, I glanced up,” the witness stated. “Over our house and a little to the right of it, about 60 degrees up, a series of lights caught my attention. I instantly thought they seemed peculiar. The object to which the lights were attached was a triangle.”

The witness described the object.

“There were white lights on the three points and a red flashing light in the middle. The object was going painfully slow. It proceeded towards Bays Mountain and gently banked to the left (the right side went up a bit) and it proceeded more directly south. I kept hoping someone would come by so I could point it out to them, but no one did. I did glance at my watch to document the time and it was precisely 7:10 p.m.”

The witness attempted to guess at the object’s altitude.

“There were no aircraft in the area and it did not make any noise. I could not tell its altitude, but it was probably around 5,000 to 10,000 feet. Not as high as commercial air traffic. I did notice that it seemed a little ‘fuzzy’ towards the front end. The air was chilly, but the sky was crystal clear. After a few moments, it just gently moved on towards the south and I proceeded to dinner. I specifically looked to see if there were traditional aircraft navigation lights and all I saw was the one bright, flashing light in the center. The duration of the experience was perhaps 4-5 minutes because it seemed in no hurry. Regarding my feelings, I was noncommittal. There it was, and I actually chuckled at the thought of seeing a possible UFO – then I just studied it for details, noted the time and went to dinner. I anticipated filing this report today.”

Tennessee MUFON State Director Angelia Sheer and Field Investigator Leonteen Connolly investigated this case and closed it as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

“Based on the witness’s statements and his interview, I am listing the sighting as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle event,” Sheer and Connolly stated in their report. “I found the gentleman to be an articulate individual who was quite familiar with cosmological activities and could differentiate between stars and planets, natural phenomena, military and general aircraft and drones. This craft seemed to not fit into any known category.”

Kingsport is a city in Sullivan and Hawkins counties in Tennessee, population 52,806.

A Tennessee witness at Knoxville reported watching a fast moving, disc-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 82433.

The witness was at work and looking through windows facing south at 4:05 p.m. on February 26, 2017.

“I saw a silver disc come zooming by heading from northeast to southwest almost directly towards McGhee Tyson Airport, which is class B airspace at an estimated 350 mph and 3,000-3,500 feet,” the witness stated. “A few minutes later, I saw an airliner descending from the south to north on downwind leg of landing pattern for the airport at one-third the speed of object. I am ex-Navy, having served aboard a helicopter carrier and do have a private pilot’s license.”

Tennessee MUFON Field Investigator Leonteen Connolly closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

“It should also be noted that the witness spent three-and-one-half years in the navy serving aboard a helicopter freighter as an aircraft handler assigned to a post in Egypt in 1981,” Connolly stated in his report. “He also has a small aircraft pilot’s license, which accounts for his ability to assess distance and speed of the craft he observed. He made those judgments because he observed a plane approaching a landing at McGhee Tyson Airport, knew of its probable speed, and estimated the craft to be at a speed so much faster. He was confident that the pilot of the incoming plane was in no position to view the craft.”

Knoxville is a city in Tennessee, and the county seat of Knox County, population 186,239.

A Tennessee witness at Latham reported watching a series of orb UFOs, including objects that will follow vehicles, according to testimony in Case 84207.

The witness mentions different sightings, but specifically points out a case that occurred at 5:15 a.m. on June 4, 2017.

“We have been seeing lights in the sky now for months,” the witness stated. “Then in the past month it has turned into the lights and now orange balls of lights following us when we’re in vehicles or even feet away when on foot.”

The events are not continuous but pop up now and then.

“It doesn't happen every night, but I can look over and tell my brother I feel it and guaranteed sometime that night something will happen. The feeling is of something right behind you, strikes pure fear in you.”

The witness discussed the events of June 4.

“We went to investigate the lights in the woods we've been seeing. We got to the wood line and the lights started moving towards us. Once one of them got approximately 15 to 20 feet away, I could see standing approximately seven feet tall, a grey, smooth-skinned, alien-looking being walking towards us. The lights we'd been seeing were its eyes. It also seemed to illuminate a dim light around it. This terrified us so we backed off. I have many videos and audio of unexplained lights and events.”

Tennessee MUFON State Director Angelia Sheer and Assistant State Director Josh Cross closed this case as an Unknown – Other.
The following are investigation case notes from two location scenes.

“Location #1: (a) High radiation (not dangerous) and spiking EM readings that were repeatable in the same area as multiple UFO, orb and what appears to be entity sightings. (b) Multiple IR recordings of unidentified lights, orbs and what appear to be viable entities. (c) Witness apprehensions of changes in the general atmosphere, usually after dark and in the early morning hours prior to dawn preceding the actual capture of IR activity.

“Location #2: (a) Definite EM disturbances that were so intense they completely confused our high-tech drone. We lost satellite feed and the drone kept sending us error messages complaining of EM interference as well as it kept going into avoidance mode. It appeared to detect something in its immediate vicinity and took measures to prevent collision, except there was no wind and nothing there that we could detect. We almost could not retrieve the drone. It was only due to the skill of my right-hand FI Josh Cross that we got it back. (b) High, unidentified night time activity. On our investigation we use programs that can track all commercial, military and satellite movement during a given time period. (c) On this occasion, we spotted a fast-moving light, with unusual changes in direction and was totally unreported on our programs. Of course, there is always the possibility of secret maneuvers but the behavior of this object in many ways did not support this. (d) At one point in the evening, approximately 10:45 p.m., I witnessed an extremely bright flash of light that remained for a good 45-50 seconds. At first, I thought it might be an Iridium satellite, but it did not track and only flared that one time. Iridium satellites have a solar panel that powers them and when they roll over on their flight path toward the sun, they flare up and then go out back and forth until out of sight. This event happened only once, and the flare was like nothing I have ever seen. Truly an anomaly.”
Latham is an unincorporated community in Weakley County, Tennessee.

A Tennessee witness at Cumberland City reported watching a sphere-shaped UFO ejecting smaller objects, according to testimony in Case 84559.

The witness and his son were camping on Elk Creek in Cumberland City, at 9:30 p.m. on June 21, 2017.

“We both witnessed a UFO hovering above the tree line,” the witness stated. “It sat there for about 10 seconds and other UFOs were ejecting out of the main object every four to five seconds.”

The scene then repeated itself four times.

“Then the object that was ejecting the others, vanished. Ten minutes later, it happened again. Except this object ejected three other objects and then it vanished. Then it took place one last time about five minutes later and ejected four more objects and then it vanished as well.”

The ejecting objects were not moving to the ground level.

“The objects that were ejected were not floating down. They were moving down like they were going somewhere.”

The witness then observed another sighting.

“I was watching a passenger jet move across the sky. It had the blinking lights and was moving south. Then I looked to the left of the jet and observed what I thought was another jet, but this object did not have any blinking lights. It was very bright and looked as if it was a lot lower than the passenger jet. And then, it just vanished as well. This second sighting took place about 30 minutes after the first sighting. No more sightings happened after that. And we were up until 3 a.m.

Tennessee MUFON State Director Angelia Sheer closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle. Cumberland City is a town in Stewart County, Tennessee, population 311.

A Tennessee witness at Turtletown reported watching a very bright and very large, cigar-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 84704.

The witness was outside in a yard at 8:50 p.m. on June 28, 2017.

“I saw a very large, bright, orange-like fire, cigar-shaped object,” the witness stated. “It then started moving toward me. I could not tell how far it was from me. Cell phones don't work here so mine was not turned on and in the house. I just watched it until it got into a hill and tree line that blocked my vision.”

The witness became scared and went into the house.

“We live in a wooded, mountainous area. I thought maybe it was a helicopter with sun shining off it at first but it was so bright, large and made no noise at all.”

Tennessee MUFON Field Investigator Leonteen "Lonnie" Connolly closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

“The craft was extremely bright to the point of appearing on fire with an orange color, and was sitting in the sky silently,” Connolly stated in his report. “She estimated the size to be starting at golf ball size and ending at basketball size if held at arm’s length; however, the shape was described as a cigar, or oblong with rounded ends and approximately eight inches in length, one mile distant and about 65 degrees above the horizon.

“While she was watching it, she was in awe and at peace but as it started to move forward toward her, rapidly reaching the treetop line, she became frightened and moved inside. Inside she became intensely scared to the point of shaking and did not return to view it further.
“Case # 84338, assigned to this investigator, covered a similar sighting in a nearby town on June 11, 2017.  The object seen was a cigar-shaped craft the size of two football fields. Latitude 35.38978; Longitude -84.68664 on that case; Latitude 35.11202; Longitude -84.34328 on this case. Distance between sightings is 53.7 miles.”

Turtletown is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Tennessee, and is in a primarily mountainous terrain, covered in forests except for areas cleared by farmers, or for ponds or roads.

A Tennessee witness at Hixson reported watching “a bright yellow light with a pure white, Saturn-like object behind it, hovering in the sky, according to testimony in Case 85233.

The witness was driving home from yoga class at 8:13 p.m. on July 20, 2017.

“I was between Dollar General and Wal-Mart on Middle Valley Road,” the witness stated. “The sky was clear, no clouds, still bright outside. I saw a bright, yellow light in the sky, thinking, there's no airports around here. I stare at it wanting to see where it's headed. I noticed that it's not moving. As I look closer, behind that bright yellow light, there's a Saturn-like, pure white object. I've never seen such a pure white color before. The next thing in my mind is to pull over but there was a red truck behind me, so I put my arm out the window and point towards the object hoping that the red truck guy sees it too. Then I passed some tall trees for three seconds, then a clear view of the entire sky, and it's gone. There was no light or object, or anything in the sky, not even a bird. I pull over after that to look around the sky. Still nothing.”

Tennessee MUFON State Director Angelia Sheer closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

Hixson is a former unincorporated community and now part of the city of Chattanooga in Hamilton County, Tennessee.

A Tennessee witness at Johnson City reported watching multiple objects the size of softballs moving to the ground level, according to testimony in Case 85441.

The witness has been seeing the same objects for over a week, with this report focusing on what occurred at 9:05 p.m. on July 27, 2017. The report was filed for the witness by a friend.

“Now the object comes closer and does not make any noise,” the reporting witness stated. “The light is so bright you cannot look directly at it. Last night it appeared to land behind a barn less than a quarter-mile away and emitted a very bright glow. The light then slowly started to fade. On the previous nights it stays stationary with the light coming on occasionally and then moves off horizontally extremely fast. This is out in the country with few houses around. The cattle on the farm next to where this was seen panic and run and moo. This is very frightening for the lady as well.”

Tennessee MUFON Field Investigator Leonteen "Lonnie" Connolly closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

“The witness described seeing a small ball of light over the top of her house that would descend to five or six feet from the ground and then the light would go out,” Connolly wrote in his report. “First one, then another would continuously do the same thing. She described them as baseball-sized and so bright they would hurt your eyes, but noiseless as they moved about. After midnight the small balls appeared to land in the field next to her. This happened four nights over the two-week period. On one of the nights she described seeing a large craft that was oblong in shape and about a telephone pole in size that had an extremely bright light and that would move a bit slowly, then turn off the light. The craft appeared from her right and moved to her left.

“In the witness’s thinking there did not seem to be a connection to the light anomalies and the larger craft except that they occurred during the same time period. It is possible that the sight of mysterious objects is not alarming or unusual to this witness because a number of strange incidents have happened to her and to other family members in her group. The statements above were the only ones she provided about the current craft and orbs, but the conversation then turned to the experiences of her family members.

“Based on my opinion of the witness’s sincere attitude during the investigation, her ability to recount the same information similarly during different parts of the conversation, and her matter-of-fact countenance, I will classify this as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.”

Johnson City is a city in Washington, Carter, and Sullivan counties, Tennessee, population 63,152.

A Tennessee witness at Greenville reported watching a pyramid-shaped object that approached quickly and suddenly vanished, according to testimony in Case 85494.

The witness was driving to Pigeon Forge with a girlfriend at 2:30 a.m. on July 30, 2017.

“She noticed an object,” the witness stated. “I thought it was just the cellphone tower with a red light in the distance. She then told me that I wasn't looking at the correct thing. I then noticed about 100 meters above the surface was an object with slow rotation, and white blinking lights on each appendage that pulsed slowly across the two. The object was triangular or square. Though a rotation was present, I didn't get to see a full rotation, and only one light was active at a time. In the center of the object was a large sphere, which seemed to produce some sort of plume that extended roughly five meters from the sphere. The appendages only produced the white lights from what seemed to be greyish circles.”

The witness described the object.

“The object was shaped somewhat like a pyramid, with convex sides, like the attached drawings. On the exterior of the object, the triangular features seemed built up to the sphere in an overlapping pattern and did the same but inverse on the inside leading up to the sphere. Imagine there's more layers of triangles overlapping in the attached (poorly drawn) drawing. That convex shape on the sides is nicely displayed, though. The drawing is of a top view.”

The object approached relatively fast.

“The speed of my vehicle was around 75 mph the whole way. While the vehicle approached at about 60 mph, it slowed to about 25 mph once it reached me. It seemed to follow a straight path in my time observing it. When I wasn't able to focus on it, my girlfriend noticed its closest point was about 200 meters from us. At this point it appeared to be about 15 meters in diameter. My girlfriend pointed out that it flew over the road, then simply vanished once we had driven about half a kilometer from the closest approach. Personally, I'm an avid rocketry nerd. It somewhat comforted me to know that that could have been an extraterrestrial vehicle, regardless of the chances. I'm sure others may have had a different reaction. I simply wished that I could study it, and it piqued my curiosity my whole journey. As for my girlfriend, it was a mixture of fear and excitement.”

Tennessee MUFON Assistant State Director Josh Cross closed this case as an Unknown – Other.

Greenville is a town in, and the county seat of, Greene County, Tennessee, population 5,062.

A Tennessee witness at Elizabethton reported watching a large, low-flying, triangle-shaped object, according to testimony in Case 85762.

The witness began to feel light-headed and queasy just before seeing the object at 11:26 p.m. on August 8, 2017.

“We were traveling northeast when I first spotted very bright lights in the sky to our right,” the witness stated. “We pulled over facing Waffle House. It had two really bright, white lights that caught our attention on its front like headlights. It was flying very low over trees and buildings. Did not see nose of a plane. It appeared triangular. It flew diagonally to our left and behind us southwest to west. We turned around and pulled over near QP and observed as it appeared to hover over a mountain west-southwest. Noticed it wobbling. Was blinded by light after which did not see it anywhere.”

Tennessee MUFON Field Investigator Leonteen "Lonnie" Connolly closed this case as an Unknown Aerial Vehicle.

“She and her husband were driving in the Elizabethton, Tennessee, business district preparing to get gas and shop at a nearby Walmart store when the witness started to feel queasy and unsettled,” Connolly stated in his report. “She further described the feeling as much stronger than mere queasiness, but rather like standing on a moving dock on water, and then also added that she felt as though riding on a roller coaster. The couple witnessed a large triangular craft flying low just above trees at 1498 W. Elk Avenue in Elizabethton. The light was very bright, nearly blinding, so they stopped to view the craft better and described it as very large, totally silent with blinking lights that flew over their car and then toward the nearby mountain and over it.”

Then they noticed that the craft stopped.

“Just out of sight but still able to see the blinking lights, the witness noticed the craft stop and hover. She had gotten out of the car but had to brace herself on the car window to settle her disorientation.  The craft then moved on out of sight from the northwest to the southwest of her position. Her husband told her he did not recognize it as any craft he was familiar with. The witness described the distance of the craft to be approximately 200 degrees above the horizon at about 1,470 feet elevation (according to a phone app the husband was using to monitor it).

“In the supplied video, an mp4 file, I observed what appeared to be a very large, silent craft just as was described by the witness but could discern no movement due to the movement by the witness. The entire description was very similar to an earlier case I had been assigned in January of this year, MUFON case #81628. The witness described a silent, gliding, triangular craft in the same county in the city of Kingsport, Tennessee.”

Elizabethton is a city in, and the county seat of, Carter County, Tennessee, population 13,372.

A Tennessee witness at Knoxville reported watching a slow-moving object with white lights in a triangle formation crossing the night sky, according to testimony in Case 87573.

The witness was outside on a back deck with his wife and a friend on October 11, 2017, when the incident occurred.

“Noticed three bright, white, triangle-shaped lights with one red flashing light in the center of the white lights in the night sky,” the witness stated. “A UFO of some type. I don’t know what it was, but, I know what it wasn’t – a known aircraft. Never seen anything like it before and I was a jet engine mechanic in the U.S. Navy.”

The witness provided an illustration of the object – which appears to be in the shape of an arrowhead.

“It did not have vertical stabilizers that I could see. It was a dark night, but it had a faint glow to it so that you could see it plain as day up in the night sky. It was very large and moved very slow across the sky for its size. It had what looked like an exhaust in the back of it, but the sound it emitted was very muffled and it was super quiet. If, by chance, we hadn’t been out on the back deck, we would have never known that it cruised overhead. We are under a major flight corridor, but this was no plane or part of the flight traffic that flies overhead.”
The witness said that he was in awe of the object.

“My wife and friend were nonchalant about the sighting. It simply ‘floated’ and flew off to the north. As a side note, I did not inform authorities such as police, FAA or others. We did not take photos. While I realize that this report cannot most likely be confirmed, maybe someone else saw the craft that same night that did report it so that this report might confirm their report.”

The witness said the object was very large.

“I would think that it was as large as five or six Boeing 747s put together. It wasn’t small like an F/A-18 Hornet or F-15 Eagle.”

Tennessee MUFON State Director Angelia Sheer closed this case as an Unknown UAV.

“The witness presented as calm, rational and well-spoken,” Sheer stated in her report. “Credibility high.  He is familiar with normal aircraft due to his past experience and felt certain that this was a true unknown.”

Knoxville is a city in Tennessee, population 186,239.
